In this video we take you behind the scenes at WDI in Glendale, Calif., where Imagineers are using a tool called the Digital Immersive Showroom or "The Dish." This virtual-reality technology assists Imagineers in spotting potential design issues before construction. It also helps them to figure out timing, audio cues and special effects. It's actually quite amazing. Take a look. VisionaiR 3D is a company that develops, builds, rents and sells Virtual Reality systems. It was founded in the year 2001 by Maarten van Grinsven and is settled in the Netherlands. We are specialized in VR presentations for the architecture industry. Our latest system is: The Simulation Cube. It is a panoramic, 360º surround projection system. It creates an image on 4 walls that completely surrounds the users to immerse them in a Virtual Reality environment. This front projected CAVE like display is cheap, fits in a small space of only 4x4x2.8 meters, and is easy to build up. The Simulation Cube is a CAVE system that was developed for commercial activities, and doesn't use headtracking to avoid cyber-sickness and to keep a multi-user environment. The Simulation Cube is ideal for presentations for up to 6 persons and because of the integrated table it's a comfortable place to host your presentation or sales-promotion. Navigating a virtual environment in the Simulation Cube is easy. The users just rotate around the table, and point the 3D joystick in the direction they want to go. The 360º field of vision keeps it easy to remain your orientation in the VR environment. The simulation Cube* (*Standard version) is a complete turnkey solution containing both software and hardware. Allowing you to experience VR environments, as well as create them. The Simulation Cube* comes with the following software pre installed on the system: Collada 3D model viewer, Quest3D, Google Earth ... |

Virtual Field Trips are for anyone interested in virtually visiting and learning about places of interest. The Virtual Trillium Trail is a new type of computer game, one that crosses the boundaries into geo-spatial visualization and virtual reality. It is an immersive learning simulation, and virtual environment of a real world field trip to a North American, deciduous forest and wildflower reserve. The content is consistent with the informal learning curriculum of the Audubon Society of Western PA and the formal Pennsylvania Department of Education Ecology standards, and more. The original prototype software was part of a Ph.D. dissertation on intrinsic learning in simulations and virtual environments where it showed close to 40% learning gains, student enjoyment, and parental approval. The Virtual Trillium Trail is a product of Virtual Field Trips, LLC. It is an immersive learning simulation and virtual environment built on high-end computer game technologies, positioned to become a new type of virtual reality game for learning in school or at home. Not your typical computer game, but a realistic virtual world infused with educational content, where the learner can explore anywhere, and inquire on anything of interest, to the breadth and depth of their desire. |

An early Omnidirectional Treadmill prototype, built in Japan in 1995. It used free-spinning rollers on the feet, so they slipped around quite easily. It had traction pads on the front of the foot, this both helped stop you from falling over and made it feel like the virtual ground was real and tangible. There's no active feedback system at all, you are held in place by a hoop around your waist. This is the only video i was able to find of it. It doesn't look like the user is walking very naturally to me, but maybe they're new at this. Quote: "Simulation of virtual buildings, before they are physically constructed, is useful for designers and clients. With this novel interface device for walkthrough simulation, the user perceives a 360-degree image of virtual space and a sense of walking while the position of the walker is fixed in the physical world. The walker wears a head-mounted display, foot-mounted omni-directional sliding devices, and a hoop around the waist, which limits the walker's position. A specialized roller skate equipped with four casters enables two-dimensional motion. The device has a brake pad at the toe. When the walker steps forward, the break pad generates friction force at the backward foot, and the friction force enhances haptic feedback. The walker can freely change the direction of walking in the hoop. The length of the step is measured by an optical encoder connected to the caster. The virtual space is correlated with the motion of the feet and ... |

How to Start, Run and Grow an Immersive Education Chapter. Immersive Education Chapters constitute the geographically distributed structure of Immersive Education through which regional and local members are supported and enriched. Chapters organize officially sanctioned Summits, Days, workshops, collaborations, seminars, lectures, forums, meetings, technical groups, technical work items, research, and related activities. Every Immersive Education Chapter is organized and run by a Board of Governors (BoG) that liaise directly with the international Immersive Education Initiative, other Chapters, and related governing bodies to support the growth of Immersive Education around the world. The Immersive Education Initiative, commonly referred to as Immersive Education (iED), is a non-profit international collaboration of universities, colleges, research institutes, museums, consortia and companies that are working together to define and develop freely available open standards, best practices, platforms, and communities of support for virtual worlds, virtual reality, augmented reality, simulations and game-based learning and training systems. Thousands of faculty, researchers, staff, administrators and students are members of Immersive Education, who together service millions of students and learners worldwide. Ashes to Ashes was intended for performance in a six sided cave located at Iowa State University's Virtual Reality Applications Center (with Lead PI Carolina Cruz-Neira) in which images appear on the floor and ceiling, creating a fully immersive experience. The first performance of the prototype for Ashes to Ashes was held at the 2002 International Super Computing Conference with a subsequent installation at 2004 Mundo Internet Conference in Madrid Spain. A portable virtual reality system consisting of four self-contained display modules was used at the conferences. Using four modules, the system can be made into a CAVE-like device with four walls or a single 32-foot long display. In February 2002, DIGIVATIONS co-founders Anne and Steve Berman along with Dawn Haines, interviewed dozens of first responders and survivors of the WTC attacks in New York City - witness stories. Anne Deane Berman transformed this source material into music, a kind of animated poetry that provided the content for the installation. Larry Tuch, Head Writer and Creative Consultant for the Paramount Simulation Group, collaborated in preparing the narrative design of the work from the source interviews. A participant can choose to take the fastest, most linear route through the narrative, thereby experiencing the basic, fundamental story being told about 9/11. Or, if they choose, at any particular scene, they can pick more stories from other witnesses who are talking about their experience of that ... |

This video shows a social experiment performed by Nils van Kleef at the Nishida Lab at Kyoto University. It uses a virtual world shown by the immersive display. It consists of 2 scenarios. In scenario 1, robots line up to form queues in front of three shops. In scenario 2, robots rush to the front of the shop. In both scenario's, the participant is asked to interact with the shopkeeper. I observe what happens, and the participants fill in a questionnaire afterwards. In most cases the participant queue up nicely, but in some cases they cut the line.
